posted on by Sarah Nelkin
Musical adapted from original Vocaloid song 'Senbonzakura' to open in Japan in March

The cast for Senbonzakura (1,000 Cherry Blossom Trees), the 10th Nico Nico musical, was revealed on Thursday. The musical is adapting the Hatsune Miku song and music video, which was written and composed by Kurousa-P and with art by Ittomaru.

AKB48 member Haruka Ishida will play Hatsune Miku, AKB48 member Miori Ichikawa will play Kagamine Rin, actor Yūki Torigoe will play Kagamine Len, and gravure idol and singer Maho Tomita will play Megurine Luka. Additionally, actress Ai Hasegawa will play Akane Meiko (with a new original surname), and actor and singer Kazuki Katou (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!'s Kikyo) will take the main role as Seine Kaito (also with an original surname).

Isamu Kayano (Macross The Musiculture) is directing the project, and Hideki Mitsui (Akazukin Cha Cha) will handle the scripts. Kurousa-P is collaborating as co-producer.

Those interested in attending can purchase tickets online to see the performances in person. Additionally, those interested can purchase "net tickets" to watch the musical online on Niconico.

The musical will play at Tokyo's Ginza Hakuhinkan Theater from March 13-24.

When the original "Senbonzakura" music video was uploaded to Niconico, it received more than 4.3 million views in less than a year. The song was also the second-most used song in JOYSOUND's karaoke rankings for the first half of 2012. The song was adapted into a novel this winter, with original illustrator Ittomaru taking charge of the publication's character design and original story.
