Sony Can Turn You Into 3D Painted Figure For US$500

6- to 12-inch figures made, colored using 3D full-body scan

Sony Music Communications revealed its "Jinrui Figure-ka Keikaku" (Human Figure-Making Project) at Anime Contents Expo in Chiba last week.

The project uses a body scanner that creates a full-body 3D scan of a person. The image is then put into a machine that makes and colors a figure of that person. Detailed items like glasses and lace cannot be included in the image because they are too difficult for the system to process. The final step is a coloring touch-up from Sony's staff.

The figures will be sent to customers two months after they get their pictures taken. A 15-centimeter (about 6-inch) small figure will cost 47,000 yen (about US$500), while a 20-centimeter (8-inch) medium figure will cost 62,000 yen (US$660). A 30-centimeter (12-inch) figure will cost 109,000 yen (US$1,160).

Sony will begin taking preorders (chosen by a random drawing) for figures in the near future.
