Konami Puts a Cap on Castlevania Unreal Engine Fan Remake

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

2016 has not been a good year for fan games. YouTuber and developer Dejawolfs is the latest to receive a cease and desist from a video game company, in this case it was Konami putting an end to their Unreal Engine remake of Castlevania.

Dejawolfs had put in over a year into the game before receiving the letter last month and completed the first level back in April. The project was aptly titled Castlevania: Remade in Unreal. All updates are stopped for the moment, but the developer wrote that fans can hold out a small bit of hope. Jay Boor from Konami UK told Dejawolfs that "will do what he can to see if it's possible to get an official license."

The Unreal Engine 4 fan remake of the original Metal Gear Solid game, "Shadow Moses," ran into a similar problem in March, although the creators did not state that Konami was involved in closing down the project. IndieDB user Boker's remake is still ongoing.

Nintendo has shutdown fan games based on Pokémon, Metroid II, and The Legend of Zelda this year alone.
