TAF 2007: A-1 Pictures Discusses Ookiku Furikabutte

Details of anime adaptation of popular baseball-themed manga presented at TAF

Anime production company A-1 Pictures held a focus panel at the Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) on Friday to discuss their first series, the TV anime adaptation of Higuchi Asa's baseball-themed manga Ookiku Furikabutte (Swing Big).

The manga has racked up an impressive list of honors. The series was listed in the Top 25 manga at the Japan Media Arts Festival and earned the "Best New Manga" award in Asahi Shinbun's 10th "Tezuka Osamu Culture Awards." 7 tankouban (volumes) of the manga have been released, selling more than 2.5 million copies.

Companies present at the panel included broadcast network TBS, original manga publisher Kodansha, anime production company Aniplex and A-1 Pictures, the main production company working on the series. The companies were represented at the panel by seiyuu (voice talent) from the show, including Yonaga Tsubasa (voice of Mihashi Ren), Nakamura Yuuichi (Abe Takaya), Taniyama Kisho (Hanai Azusa), Shimono Hiro (Tajima Yuuichirou) and Hayamizu Risa (Momoe Maria).

After A-1 Pictures was created by Aniplex little over a year ago, the group stated at the panel that they wanted to capture the feeling of a high school baseball tournament for this series. Staff members have also been studying player and ball movements in baseball games in the hopes of giving the anime a more realistic feel.
