Japan's Copyright Groups to Launch Portal Site in 2008

Current showcase database has 2,235,756 music entries, 58,901 comic/manga entries

A committee formed by 17 of Japan's copyright holder groups is planning to open a free Internet portal with a searchable database system of product details and copyright information for music, movies, television, music, literature, comics, anime, art/photo, and games next January. The objective is to provide convenient access to any media item's author, credited staff, and copyright information.

Until the new database opens, The Contents Portal Site Operations Committee is currently hosting a Japan Content Showcase with 2,235,756 music entries, 728,718 literature entries, and 58,901 comic/manga entries. For example, it lists 362 Gundam literature volumes and 303 Gundam manga volumes. As the showcase is still a work-in-progess, the anime section only has four items. The showcase's Japanese databank front-end is immediately available for use, while the English front-end is not usable in its current form.

The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan opened a separate database of Japanese movies in August. Japan's government and broadcasters is planning another database for overseas licensing of drama and anime.
