Ponyo-Inspired Pop-Pop Boat Toy Sold in Japan

posted on by Egan Loo
Replica of Sousuke's boat runs on one candle and steam power

Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: The Japanese toy company ENSKY has announced that it is selling a working "pop-pop" boat toy based on the boat seen in Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, this year's Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. Like pop-pop boats that have been sold around the world for over a century, this 20-centimeter-long (8-inch-long) boat toy runs on a single candle. The candle heats up water to form steam that jets out the back in short bursts — hence, the name "pop-pop" ("pon-pon" in Japanese). The toy, which replicates the boat of the movie character Sousuke, will ship in Japan at the end of this month.

The company's website is streaming a video of the toy in action.
