Harlock creator earns Order of the Rising Sun; Kitarō creator named Persons of Cultural Merit

The Japanese government announced on Wednesday that it will award Leiji Matsumoto, the creator of Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and other classic manga and anime, with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (pictured at right). He is among 4,173 people being honored this fall.

The Japanese government also announced last week that GeGeGe no Kitarō manga creator Shigeru Mizuki and actress Sayuri Yoshinaga (Taro the Dragon Boy) are among 17 people honored as Persons of Cultural Merit this year.

Last year, Studio Ghibli film composer Joe Hisaishi and Square Enix Holdings chairman Yasuhiro Fukushima won Medals of Honor, while director Nobuhiko Ōbayashi (1983's Toki o Kakeru Shōjo, Shōnen Keniya) and manga translator and scholar Frederik L. Schodt received The Order of the Rising Sun honors. This past spring, Golgo 13 manga creator Takao Saitō and Sunset on Third Street (San-chōme no Yūhi - Yūyake no Uta) manga creator Ryohei Saigan were among those honored.
