"Definitive," condensed compilation of 40 years of Lupin III anime

The official Japanese website for the Lupin III anime franchise announced on Wednesday that a "definitive," condensed compilation of Lupin III on Blu-ray Disc and DVD is in the works. The producers are targeting next spring for the tentatively titled Lupin III Master File project (no relation to the similarly titled Sega Saturn game). The site promises to provide more details about the project in the future.

Manga creator Monkey Punch launched the first Lupin III manga series in 1967 with the grandson of gentleman thief Arsène Lupin as the title character. The first television anime series is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

The Japanese network NTV had announced a new television project with an advertisement that said "new TV series" in April, but NTV later confirmed with ANN that its project will be a special which will air this fall.

Discotek announced last month that it will release the first television anime series on DVD in North America next spring.

Update: More background information added.
