Film Star Jean Reno Returns as Doraemon in New Ad

posted on by Egan Loo

The third installment in the live-action Doraemon ad campaign starring international film star Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional, Mission: Impossible, The Da Vinci Code) began airing in Japan on Friday. "Nobita's Detachment from Doraemon" is the newest 30-second television commercial in the Toyota Motor Corporation's ad series which depicts the characters of the classic children's manga Doraemon in live-action, two decades after they grow up.

Since the first ad two weeks ago, actor Satoshi Tsumabuki (Dororo, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, Smuggler) has been playing Nobita, the hapless owner of Doraemon. Joining Reno in the second commercial are former News band member Tomohisa Yamashita (Ikebukuro West Gate Park, Kurosagi) as Nobita's friend Suneo and actress Asami Mizukawa (Nodame Cantabile, Dark Water) as Nobita's female friend Shizuka. "Nobita's Barbeque," the campaign's second ad, began airing on November 18.

In the third ad, Nobita looks into the future with the "Time TV" and is unhappy that his friend Suneo is still driving with their femaie friend Shizuka-chan. Nobita wants to change the outcome even though he has no car or driver's license. Doraemon (Reno) pulls out the "Dokodemo Door" (Anywhere Door), but it leads them to the beach and the bully Gian. After refusing Doraemon's "Takecopter" (Bamboocopter), Nobita says, "I don't want to rely on those tools anymore. I want to drive myself." Then, Nobita asks Doraemon for the Dokodemo Door in order to get to the Tokyo Motor Show, which will begin on Saturday. The pair goes through the door and glimpses one of the show's Toyota vehicles.
