French Film Fest to Screen After School Midnighters, Gyo Films

L'étrange Festival to run from September 6-16 in Paris

The organizers of France's L'étrange Festival have announced that it will screen the CG anime film Hōkago Midnighters (After School Midnighters) and the anime adaptation of Junji Ito's Gyo psychological horror manga. The 18th L'étrange Festival will run from September 6-16 in Paris.

In the slapstick comedy story of After School Midnighters, a human anatomical model comes to life at midnight in a science classroom at an elite elementary school. Kouichi Yamadera (Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion) is starring in the film as the naked anatomical model Kunstlijk, and Hiromasa Taguchi (Kaasan - Mom's Life) will voice the skeleton specimen Goth. Hitoshi Takekiyo is returning to direct the film after directing the original 2007 CG anime short After School Midnight (Hōkago Midnight). The film will open in Japan on August 25. L'étrange Festival will screen the European premiere of the film in Japanese with English subtitles on September 6 and again on September 16.

Takayuki Hirao (Futakoi Alternative, The Garden of Sinners' fifth film) directed the anime adaptation of Junji Ito's Gyo manga. The 70-minute OVA was released in February in Japan. Big Comics published two compiled volumes of Ito's manga series in 2002, and Viz Media released them in North America. The OVA was previously screened at London's Terracotta Festival in April, and then at the New York Asian Film Festival in May. L'étrange Festival will screen the film in Japanese with English subtitles on September 12, 13, and 15.
