posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Katsuhiro Ōtomo (Akira, Memories, Short Peace) will appear in person at the 41st Annual Annie Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday to receive the Winsor McCay Award.

The award is "given to individuals in recognition of lifetime or career contributions to the art of animation in producing, directing, animating, design, writing, voice acting, sound and sound effects, technical work, music, professional teaching, and for other endeavors which exhibit outstanding contributions to excellence in animation." The society notes that the award "stands as one of the highest honors given to an individual in the animation industry in recognition for career contributions to the art of animation."

Production I.G and Hiroyuki Okiura's A Letter to Momo and Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises films have both been nominated in the Best Animated Feature category. The two films are competing against Despicable Me 2, Ernest & Celestine, Frozen, Monsters University, and The Croods.
