Haruma Miura Stars in Live-Action Attack on Titan Film

Newspapers: Bloody Monday actor to begin shooting on "Battleship Island" this summer

Japanese daily newspapers are reporting on Thursday that 23-year-old Haruma Miura is starring in the live-action film of Hajime Isayama's popular manga Attack on Titan. The papers say that the actor is preparing for the beginning of filming early this summer at Hashima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture. The island has been nicknamed Gunkanjima ("Battleship Island") and is known worldwide for its landscape of dilapidated buildings.

Miura's previous manga-inspired projects include Gokusen 3, Bloody Monday, Crows Zero II, and Kimi ni Todoke.

Isayama's manga depicts the battles between humans and the giants who now rule the world outside humans' walled enclaves. The film incorporates original elements into its own story.

Storyboarder and special effects director Shinji Higuchi (Heisei-era Gamera films) is set to helm the film. Yuusuke Watanabe (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, live-action Gantz, Gantz II: Perfect Answer, 20th Century Boys, Gatchaman) is writing the script. Film critic Tomohiro Machiyama, who is also friends with Isayama, is working on the scripts together with Isayama and Watanabe. Isayama has also been present at business meetings for the film and has offered ideas on the scripts and characters. TOHO is producing and distributing the film.

The film is slated to open next year. While Miura missed an event on March 30 due to poor health, the newspapers reported that he is already working again.

Higuchi already shot a live-action Attack on Titan commercial for the Subaru Forester:

Hajime Isayama's original Attack on Titan manga has inspired four spinoff manga, and a 25-episode television anime version aired last year. Isayama launched the series in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009, and the manga now has 30 million copies in print.

Kodansha Comics is publishing Isayama's original manga in North America. The company is also releasing three of the four spinoff manga, and the Attack on Titan Guidebooks: INSIDE & OUTSIDE. Vertical is publishing the Attack on Titan: Before the Fall light novel series.

Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the anime version of the manga as it aired in Japan, and Funimation will release the series on home video this year.
