The official website for the television anime adaptation of Tsutomu Nihei's Knights of Sidonia manga announced on Saturday that the series' Blu-ray Disc release will include "New Angle Version Special Clips." The anime's first Blu-ray Disc and DVD volumes will ship in Japan on May 28.
The special footage will feature a compilation of original, unmodified clips alongside unaired footage shot from a different perspective. The anime's executive producer and CG supervisor are supervising the special footage. Concentrating on battle, violent, and sexy scenes, each volume will include 20 new clips. A preview of special footage from the first episode is streaming on the series' official website.
The website also announced that the first of three planned special screening events will be held at the Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills theater on April 27 at 7:00 p.m. The event will screen the anime's first three episodes and include an advanced screening of the fourth episode before it airs on television in Japan. Six of the series' main voice cast members will also attend and participate in a talk event. Attendees will receive a special favor, and fans who attend all three events will receive another special present. Tickets for the first event will go on sale on Sunday for 3,000 yen (about US$30).
The manga's "traditional science-fiction" story takes place after humans flee Earth due to the devastating invasion of alien creatures called Gauna. Humans travel through space in giant ships while the Gauna continue to pursue them. As a new human culture develops, people fight the Gauna with Morito (Guardian) robotic mecha. A young man named Nagate Tanikaze trains as a Morito pilot aboard the spaceship Sidonia and defends its people from Gauna attacks.
Netflix will stream the series "firstly and exclusively" in both the Japanese audio with English subtitles and in "dubbed local language dialogue" in all Netflix territories this summer. The Aniplus HD channel will simulcast the anime in Southeast Asia beginning on April 23.
The anime marks the 30th anniversary of POLYGON PICTURES, a studio that has earned Daytime Emmy Awards (Transformers Prime, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and an Annie Award (Tron: Uprising).
Kobun Shizuno (G.I. Joe: Sigma 6, Detective Conan movie) is directing the anime with co-director Hiroyuki Seshita (Street Fighter x Tekken, Final Fantasy). Sadayuki Murai (Steamboy, Millennium Actress) is writing the scripts and serving as series script supervisor, and Yuki Moriyama (Street Fighter x Tekken, Dino Dominion) is adapting the characters for animation. Musical duo angela is performing the opening theme "Sidonia."
