Kojima unveils multiplayer mode at The Game Awards 2014

The first trailer for the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain game's Metal Gear Online: Tactical Team Operations mode premiered at The Game Awards on Friday. Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima announced at the awards that the newest Metal Gear Online installment will be the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain game's multiplayer mode. (The trailer begins at around the 5:00 mark in the below video.)

The Game Awards aired and streamed live beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET on Friday. Kiefer Sutherland (voice of Snake) and Kojima appeared at the event to discuss Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Kojima said the development team will announce more features in the coming months as they work to ensure that "the online experience will satisfy the core fans as well as new players."

Konami began streaming an extended trailer and several promotional videos for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain last month. The game is slated to ship for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PC in 2015.

Metal Gear Solid V consists of two separate games: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes provides the backstory behind the events in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes already debuted on consoles in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Europe in March. Both games will be released for PC via Steam in the future.

Sutherland plays the role of Snake in the games produced and directed by Kojima. Yoji Shinkawa serves as character and mechanical designer, Hideki Sasaki as CG art director, Junji Tago as technical director, and Masayuki Suzuki as lighting artist.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain features Snake after he wakes up from a nine-year coma. Snake has lost a lot of his abilities, and must crawl through a hospital to escape.

Kojima teased a Metal Gear Collection 2014 on Twitter in September.

Update: Official The Game Awards video added.
