J.C. Staff Debuts Taboo Tattoo Battle Action TV Anime in July (Updated)

Takashi Watanabe (Slayers, Shana, Heavy Object) directs "stylish action epic"

The wraparound jacket band on Shinjirō's 11th Taboo Tattoo manga volume announced on Wednesday that the television anime of the manga will premiere in July. Takashi Watanabe (The Slayers, Shakugan no Shana, Freezing, Heavy Object) is directing the "stylish action epic" series at the anime studio J.C. Staff.

Shinjirō launched the manga in Comic Alive magazine from Kadokawa's Media Factory imprint in November 2009. Yen Press will publish the second volume in North America in April, and it describes the story:

By all accounts, middle schooler Seigi is pretty unremarkable except for his martial arts prowess and a desire to protect the weak. But when his good intentions are put to the test by saving an old homeless man from some street thugs, the mysterious man shows his gratitude by...burning a tattoo onto Seigi's palm?!

It turns out, the tattoo is a powerful secret weapon that everyone--including a formidable girl with a tattoo of her own--is after. With his life on the line and his martial arts skills alone no match against super-powered foes, will Seigi be able to unlock the latent potential of his tattoo and live to fight another day?!

Shinjirō is also drawing manga adaptation of Gen Urobuchi and Type-Moon's Fate/Zero light novel series. Dark Horse Comics will publish the second volume in English in June.

Update: The anime's official website updated with more staff and a visual. Shinya Hasegawa (Golden Time, Revolutionary Girl Utena) will design the characters and Mayori Sekijima (Skip Beat!, Pandora Hearts) and Masateru Ohtake will handle series composition and scripts. Shinji Hosoe is composing the music.
