Sony Expects to Ship 78 Million Total PS4 Consoles Worldwide By End of 2017 (Updated)

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) reiterated its forecast on Tuesday that it estimates it will ship 18 million PlayStation 4 consoles during fiscal year 2017, which began on April 1, 2017 and ends on March 31, 2018. The company estimates it will have shipped 78 million PS4 consoles by the end of fiscal year 2017.
The console is selling faster than the company's PlayStation 2, which had eventually sold an industry record of over 150 million units by 2011, 11 years after it debuted in 2000.
Also on Tuesday, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and Global Chief Executive Officer Andrew House stepped down from his position, while John (Tsuyoshi) Kodera, the Deputy President before, has been appointed the new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
The PlayStation 4 console first launched in the U.S. and Canada in November 2013 and in Japan in February 2014. Sony shipped 7.5 million PS4 units in fiscal year 2013, and 14.8 million units in fiscal year 2014. Sony's new financial results for the 2016 fiscal year revealed that the PlayStation 4 shipped 17.7 consoles during fiscal year 2015, and 20.0 million consoles during fiscal year 2016. The combined total of consoles shipped worldwide between fiscal years 2013-2016 is 60 million.
The company revealed in June that it had shipped 60.4 million PS4 units as of June 11.
