Annie Award Nominations Follow-up

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Follow-up details on why Paprika and Fullmetal Alchemist were not nominated.

The Nominations for the 2006 Annie Awards have been announced. No anime was nominated.

Funimation's theatrical release of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shambala would have been eligible. However it was not submitted.

Antran Manoogian, president of ASIFA Hollywood, the non-profit organization behind the Annies, spoke to ANN about FMA and Paprika. "Paprika's been on my radar for a while," stated Manoogian, "I was told by a Sony exec in September or October that their plan was to release after the 1st of the year [2007]." However Sony eventually organized a limited theatrical release of Paprika in order to make it eligible for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The limited release also made Paprika eligible for the Annies, however it was never submitted. "We encourage producers to consider submitting for Annie awards. Some cases they do, some they don't," states Manoogian.

Under current 2006 rules, Paprika will not be eligible for an Annie in 2008, because it was released in 2006. Manoogian points out that there is always a possibility of the rules changing from one year to another.

Howl's Moving Castle was nominated for Annie Awards in three categories (Best Animated Feature, Directing in an Animated Feature Production & Writing in an Animated Feature Production), however it did not pick up any awards (Spirited Away won Best Animated Feature and 3 other awards in 2002).

The 34 Annual Annie Awards will be presented on February 11, 2007.
