Now this is probably something I shouldn't even be thinking about but if hypothetically I was to develop a 'relationship' with a fictional person, it would certainly be one of my own creation. I mean otherwise, yeah. You're sort of 'sharing' your girlfriend with this whole legion of people. That would be just weird. (Well...weirder.)
----------------------- Oh god...Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. That movie should be destroyed and erased from history solely based on it having the most painfully awful name ever. (Don't know if it's any good or not. Sort of beside the point). ----------------------- Yeah, Harvey Dent's face. It looks cool but just a tiny bit fake. ----------------------- There is something horribly wrong with your genre if this statement makes sense: "I'm not bothered by porn with little girls being ripped apart by tentacle raping monsters. It's the really sick stuff that bothers me." ------------------------ Yeah, that article was pretty bad. I mean as I said at the time, if you're talking volume wise, yeah. There probably are more notable Japanese shows than western shows. But I don't even know that percentage wise it's all that different. It seems like it simply comes down more to the total volume produced than anything. Ultimately, the whole comparison thing just seems pointless and snobby. Also, trying to claim retroactively that he only meant TV shows is a cop out. In fact, that was a big part of my issue with the article. He's happy to only talk about TV shows when it comes to western animation but when it comes to anime he repeatedly throws in movies. Oh and by the way, people who don't like Spongebob are just idiots who can't look past the surface. Clearly it's actually an immensely complex character piece about the struggles of a socially inept boy with a rare genetic disorder requiring special orthopedic pants and his troubled relationship with his mentally handicapped neighbor/lover. In it's portrayal of it's two leading characters, Spongebob and Squidward, it juxtaposes the struggle of children with the pressure to conform with the struggle of adults to come to terms with their failure to realize their dreams to form a bitingly satirical allegory of the conventional suburban life. Apparently most people are two dumb to see past the surface level fish based appearance. Truly though it is the Animal Farm of underwater. ----------------------- Oh my god, yes. Venture Brothers is fantastic. I love Clone High too actually. Or another favorite of mine is a show called Bromwell High. A show from the UK that also aired in Canada. I don't think it did in the US though. It's takes the utter absurdity and randomness of early era Family Guy, combines it with the satirical take on modern life found in the best of the Simpsons and wraps it all in that certain quirky British wit. I know that sounds horribly pretentious but it really is just hilarious. ----------------------- Aw come on. They're all jackasses but the sub ones are the worst. I don't think there's something wrong with personally being unwilling to watch anime subtitled. Yeah, it's not realistic to expect everything to be dubbed but the sub people act like it's somehow a crime that a dub should even be allowed to exist.
Yeah man, WTF? That's somebody's wife you're talking about!!!!! |

[quote]Books are both cheaper and more discreet, so there might be an attraction there. I think it also has a lot to do with the Japanese anime market, too.[quote]
Well, I know manga is fairly cheap in Japan, but over here, not so much. There are women willing to pay for it, though. I saw a discussion going over on Amazon that has thousands of posts. Those women are serious. They spend what must be hundreds of dollars per week on yaoi. They alert each other when they see EBay sales of out-of-print titles, some of which are going for hundreds of dollars per volume. I think there is definitely a market for yaoi DVDs over here, but maybe not so much in Japan. you might be on to something there - probably a greater desire for the discretion of print for the women of Japan, where that is not such an issue for American women... [quote]That being said, this fangirl is certainly looking forward to the upcoming 13-episode Ai no Kusabi remake. So there. I'll take my "porn" where I can get it.[quote] From what I have seen, the production standards look very good. I'm wondering if the teaser I saw will be representative of the entire series. I would imagine it would be quite expensive. Regardless, I won't complain. |

To be honest, when I read that Spice and Wolf was a topic for this weeks' show, I had a feeling Zac wouldn't like it...
It's a different type of show. Like Baccano. At least in terms of different appoach and different themes. Personally, Spice and Wolf rubbed me in a very good way. I don't know how he detected a "moe" vibe... I'll give him the "tsundre" but moe? Ehhh... I don't think so... True, anime doesn't really delve into economics that much, and if that was what it was ALL about, then I would side with you. Holo was a fascinating character, not groundbreaking, but if you add her appearance, her timeless wisdom, her switchy moods spoiler[which does make sense, since lonely people try to put up a front that serves to convince others that they aren't.], and her unique relationship with Lawrence equaled a refreshing show! I noticed that Zac tends to watch different shows under hazardous circumstances. To enjoy something to the fullest, you need to know what you are gettting yourself into. That's why it took me SO LONG for me to finally appreicate Baccano! Good show otherwise. I read Chris Beveridge's reviews all the time (including his recent Spice and Wolf review), and he is a very level-headed guy! It's nice to see someone really enjoy their work enough to donate 70+ hours of time into it (ouch..) Can't wait for next week! Keep up the great work guys!!! |

Haven't listened to the show yet, but total props for the Big Lebowski reference in the title.
No need to fear the Spice & Wolf fanboys, they believe in nothing, NOTHING! But they may just cut off your johnson... EDIT: And an Upright Citizen's Brigade reference! This truly is sweeps week. Does this mean Funi owes you a million dollars, Zac? |

It's fine if you didn't understand "why" the show was made, your opinions are whatever.
But please stop throwing the word "moe" around like some catch-all term of what's wrong with the show (or all shows for that matter). "Moe" this, "dere" that; it just sounds like your reaching for something that's not there; instead of trying to understand the characters in the show. |

Why!? Why does Keanu Reeves still have a job? Who in Hollywood thinks the man can act!?
And why, Dear Lord, does Hollywood insist on crushing all of my fond memories as a child? Star Wars? Indiana Jones? And now they want to crush Cowboy Bebop: My Anime security blanket that I cling to desperately in these tough times. *Weeps like a small girl with a skinned knee... but in a totally manly way* Venture Bros. & Harvey Birdman = Pure Genius! Re: The Marathon But it's gotta be the right show... For example, I've been marathoning the FUN. DVD's of One Piece. I've covered 1-80 ep. in the last 4-ish days and despite two small/minor fluff arcs, I really enjoy it. Funimation has done a very good job of it. It's hilarious! And adult; I dig it. My point being: If I enjoy it and I'm into it, I'll burn through it. I'm the same with with a good book or game. Re: Hentai and the decay of one's soul "The First Rule of Japanese Porn: As Cuteness increases, so do the odds of being horribly, horribly raped... by giant tentacles." I don't see how you wouldn't eat a bullet by watching too much of it. The ubiquity of misogyny and sexual violence in Hentai is, I find, the most troubling. I have no problems with sex, sexuality or porn, indeed, I find it odd that violence -in general- is more socially acceptable than sexuality (the former being a generally negative experience, while the latter a generally more positive experience). But the misogyny and sexual violence... yeah, that'll eat at your soul. Re: Pooh (and not, Winnie the...) Pooh + Comedy = GOLD! Pooh + Porn = |

I didn't think the fourth Indy movie was all that bad. Why is it that folks seem to think Biblical artifacts with holy power are more believable than interdimensional beings? |

Here's a question for people who have seen Spice and Wolf is it like in the Wheel of Time where people who constantly argue over what coin is worth more, and people arguing over grain?

As for Battle Angel... I think they have had the FX technology for a number of years now that they could have made a fairly convincing Alita... it just probably would have cost a lot of money to do so. Now with the new mo-cap technology and advanced CGI, it will just be easier to do.
**AI had a couple worthy CG shots that blended man and machine quite well (sadly it was only a couple of shots): http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/5228/cgi2.jpg http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/9240/cgi1.jpg |

lol, I know exactly what you're talking about. I thought that myself when I heard it played back. Rest assured, that one, at least, was genuine.
Are you really trying to state that artistic influences, possibly-intentional genre tie-ins and character archetypes that have become otaku social movements are not a valid discussion of a show? Understanding the characters is all well and good, but if we're to have a discussion about an art form, all of those factors are extremely important and deserve addressing. |

Well I got to say this is one of my favorite episodes. Every topic was fun and interesting to me, and before I had a chance to laugh at his response, Chris gave some very thoughtful and legit answers to some hard and awkward questions.
Count me as one of the people who love Spice & Wolf. I don't know usually I go for things that go somewhere faster, but S&W really clicked with me. Also Zac how do you decide weather a character is a bitch or not. There has been two characters you've called "complete bitches" (Masane and Holo), both of which I disagree with. This isn't a complaint, just wondering. One last thing, does anyone know a good site where you can get info on if a Blu-Ray is upscaled or is HD. I find the PS3 to be a good upconverter, and don't want to re buy a series if I'm not going to notice a difference between the DVD and Blu-Ray. |

They say the name of the anime in Spice and Wolf ? Really? lol! Reminds me of how in Deep Blue Sea they said "That's the answer to the riddle. Because that's what an 8000 pound mako thinks about. About freedom. About the deep blue sea" *cringe*. Sometimes it's best not to do things like that lol!
Oh and Crash was corny lol . I can't believe that won anything lol. God...it was so lame...I admire the attempt, but please . Chris watches 70-80 episodes a week? OMG man. That's a lot of anime right there. I shutter at the thought. Oh and I disliked Spirited Away too. But then again I disliked most of the Miyazaki stuff, so that doesn't mean much. As for western animation. Look I tried to like it, but almost all of it is crap. There are of course the rare amazing film like Coraline that I really enjoy, but most of it's eh, or worse anoying. And TV forgett it. It's hard to find a cartoon that's watchable on TV at least for my tastes. So yeah anime is much better then western animation. And no it's because people in Japan are naturally more talented or something lol. Theories like that are floating around and it's a bit scary. But I think the one HUGE problem with western animation entirely is it's look at as nothing more then throwaway entertianment. Either something to use to babysit children, or fart jokes for adults (that are always throw away kinda shows, episodic and such). The Animation Age Ghettois a big problem hurting western stuff, preventing some cartoons from truly becomeing something interesting. There are other problems too, and there are things that help western animation. But until we get the idea that cartoons are for kids, or otherise must be adult humor (i.e. Simpsons) I don't think we'll see that many amazing stuff on this side of the Pacific. It's sad too because I want there to be more great stuff out here. Stuff like Coraline make me have a lot of faith in the entire american animation industry! If something like that can be made, perhaps there's hope for more great things to come? LoL I remember the "Anime on DVD bankrupted the industry!" HA!! That was a good one. Anyway great podcast! I can't recall anything close to a titular line being in Spice & Wolf. Granted, fansubs! It was always really more implied. Oh well. If thats what the scriptwriter thinks works... he must be working from the original theatrical version of the show, where Lawrence is teaching Horo how to drive the cart and the guy pulls up next to him and says "I'm so tired of all this spice and wolf." |
