has anyone noticed the censors have gotten really lazy? i mean i thought at least with Samurai Champloo they made the edits creative, but now it's just pathetic. they're using these 2 second bleeps to censor words in SAC and Evangelion, and it's annoying as hell. on top of that, the editing has been very inconsistent. there's times when they'll censor a word in one episode and then leave it alone in another. they're just doing a very half assed job.

It's called Adult Swim for a reason. Why does it need to be censored in the first place.

Logical? No!

This has been a little problem for a long time. I understand the censorship, although I don't like it, but at least they could be more consistent. Oh well, this is just TV, most of the stuff they show I'm getting on DVD.

There still has to be some censorship because all it'll take is the voice of one person who just happens to be watching at the exact time to completely make a mess out of something. The probablity of that happening, however, is very small but it's better to not take the risk.

I was a little annoyed when they took the blood and other such thing out of Blue Gender (last year, was it?). It's ony so late at night, there's no real reason to censor it.

"Bleeping" is really all they can do for Eva. Re-dubbing lines would be nearly impossible at this point. For SAC, I guess they just didn't feel like it.

Honestly, I don't understand why they have to censor the language anyway. If it was F-bombs, I could understand, but (in Eva, at least), we are just looking at some 'damns' and 'hells'. There really isn't any reason to censor that on something airing at those times. Not to mention it's titled "ADULT Swim," and the shows usually have age ratings at the beginning. And if it's real bad, just post an additional warning like they do for violent TV shows or movies.

Most of Adult Swim's original shows are much worse than the animes anyway when it comes to language.

Thats true, nya. I've heard some interesting words pop up in BoonDocks and Aqua Teen and Sea Lab.

When I think of the word "Adult Swim", I think of a hardcore porn scene that takes place in a pool. With that said, I agree with everyone being mad cause of these bleeps, but I like them. I think it makes the show more "funny", you can use your imagination to add in even harsher words than the word that was edited, and it also makes you, well maybe not YOU but I'm sure it does to some people, want to buy the DVD to view it in all of it's unedited glory.

I don't know why you people complain either. It's "free" anime, I still have to pay my DirecTV bill so not entirely free, so I don't bitch and moan with simple edits. Movies on USA and Comedy Central, yeah I know they have the "Secret Stash", are edited and no one says shit. If you want to watch completely unedited anime, buy the DVD, or watch Tehxnolyze on Animidnight.

Don't networks do edits because they want to please their sponsors? No Sponsors = No Free Anime

I think they mainly edited out the sex. It was still the bloodiest show they've ever shown on Cartoon Network.

I want to know why they can's simply mute the words out. I mean, they've only been doing it for the the last four years.

Blue Gender aired in late summer 2003.

My guess for the unreasonable censorship of blood and curse words is that anime is still a controversial media to the majority of the US. I say controversial because as we all know, anime isn't intended for just kids like cartoons yet the average American will still view anime just like any other cartoon. I'm guessing it'll be a gradual reduction of censorship as more and more people get used to the concept of anime "intended for adult viewers", but it'll take some time. As for the inconsistencies, I have absolutely no idea.

I did find it odd how adult swim often times was only censoring goddamn certain times and other times not at all. And in both of those instances I was watching at the same time (I believe it was 12:30 or so). But anyways when Shinji would say 'goddamn' and [AS] would just put a long bleep which kinda ruins the moment when Shinji is pleading with his dad not to active the dummy plug. But then like a half an hour later Boondock will use the same language and not have anything bleep out.
Till next time,

Delta Kiral

You guys do realize its cyclical. The FCC cracks down real hard for a little while then eases up. The truth is both sides play the game its all for show at this point. Cartoon network is usually block access on cable and satalite. That means its part of the basic package. Basic package is halfway between explicit access and network television.

I turned on adult swim the other night and was quite pleased by what I saw. Though I am not shocked. What you may see as a lousey job of censorship. May just may be a case of great censorship. The kind that lets a few racier things slip through. They make what looks like a concerted effort to censor so they cover themselves, and they get to slip a few naughty things in.

Its all really a game the network pushes the envelope a little bit at a time. The FCC makes a token resistence the bar moves a few more inches. This is basically done as a PR stunt by politicians.

They know they cannot stop the progression the networks will not allow it. The audience is demanding more maturity and a harder edge. When a network cannot deliver they lose market shares to channels like HBO that are very free. So we get a slow crawl. The channels push a little make it look increadibly hard until its no longer considered bad.

In the end all the FCC acts like is a flood gate. It keeps the bar from flying 20 feet out. This gives the more conservative viewers some time to adjust and except, and in the end to no longer see anything wrong with what used to be censored.

Remember 40 years ago married couples slept in 2 different beds. Even the insination that they had sex was unseemly. Even though 3 munchkins are running around the house.

Give it some time I guess is all I am saying. We are getting a bit more. I highly doubt they are trying to do a flawless censorship job on it, and maybe in a year more words will be uncensored and we will get even more graphic material.

Except for the fact that the FCC doesn't have any control over cable channels, AND it only has control for up to around 10:00 PM. After that channels (including non-cable) can do whatever they want; they just choose not to.
