Kagen no Tsuki (Last Quarter)'s plot sounds awfully close to Last Quater movie distributed by Geneon...

I haven't had to chance to watch it yet but it seemed like a pretty good movie from the trailer and got it on last Geneon sale at Rightstuf.com...

I have some free time coming up and will catch up on DVD watching...

I liked the movie adaptation and I do wish the manga would be licensed. But I don't know if I can read it and not think of Hyde as Adam.

it's arguably better than Nana or Paradise Kiss

Quoted for truth. Methinks it's the best work from Ai Yazawa. At its early stages, NANA was on par with LQ, but now the story has stretched too thin, making it difficult to focus and concentrate.

With the current trend of decreasing the age of target readers, we may not be able to see a story comparable to LQ in Ribon in the future. If it survives, that's it.

You... do know the latter was adapted from the former, right? Rolling Eyes

I bought the Last Quarter movie. For those who haven't seen it, Hyde from Le Arc~en~Ciel (SP?) plays Adam and Chiaki Kuriyama (the murderous school girl from Kill Bill) plays Mizuki.

I enjoyed the movie alot. Very Happy

I didn't know that it was based on a manga so I'm now looking forward to seeing that as well. Hopefully it will get licensed soon.

I just finished Death Note 12 last week. Although the series sagged around volumes 8 and 9, I agree that it was a pretty good ending. Does anyone out there know if Viz will license and publish Death Note 13 (How to Read)? I've read about it online, but would love to get a copy (in English) for myself.

They've already confirmed that they'll release it. I believe the scheduled release date is sometime in February 2008.

I agree with your assessment of DN12, but I'm assuming you partly gave it an A-, because you're glad it didn't wind up being 50-100 volumes. Wink Anyway, I ended up donating the books to my local library. It's been interesting, but in the end, like Hikaru No Go, it's just another Yu Gi Oh cash-in with prettier art. As for Last Quarter being better than ParaKiss and, maybe I'd agree, since that series is really uneven, but Nana is pretty enjoyable, even though it doesn't seem to have any direction. Of course, I haven't gotten as far as dormcat....

I was conflicted with the last volume of Death Note. On one hand I was glad that it wasn't ruined too much and that it bowed out gracefully and didn't keep going. On another I was slightly dissapointed with how it reached it's conclusion and how the volumes before it had dragged a lot and done nothing.

Now, last quarter. I remember I saw a preview for this on one of the parakiss dvd's and the Yazawa connection got me thinking about it. I would've watched the movie but it featured all those j-rock guys so I got to thinking that it might not be my thing. The manga though has none of those things so perhaps I would enjoy that more.

For those who might be interested and happen to read French, the manga is being published by Delcourt (the first volume was out in June). I have not read it yet (manga usually take close to 2 months before they arrive in Montreal) but this is one of many series by Ai Yazawa published in French.

I love Last Quarter - I actually own the manga even though I can't read any Japanese... there are translations on-line though.

I wonder who would be a good candidate to pick this up, it's a bit older too. TokyoPop? They published Paradise Kiss which I assume did fairly well. Or maybe even Viz - NANA is their big hit and maybe they were testing the waters with the movie.

I'll email both anyway, and if you're interested in seeing this licensed maybe you should too Smile

Viz: http://www.viz.com/about/contact/contact.php
TokyoPop: http://www.tokyopop.com/corporate/contact_us (eh, I'm not quite sure which one of those email addresses would be the best?)

Death Note's ending was controversial. I thought the actual events were fine, but the pacing was not.

I think one thing that people need to note is that the reason Death Note's ending was rushed is because Ooba Tsugumi (as she's admitted in interview) wanted the series to be exactly 108 chapters long-- the number 108 has some symbolic meaning in Japan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/108_%28number%29 . Whether one thinks it was worth it or not is another story, but it does sort of explain why it turned out the way it did.

Well, it's a Shueisha title so Viz automatically has first dibs unless they want to pass it on to someone else.

I doubt that the age of the series would even be an issue -- all they'd have to do is slap "from the creator of Nana and Paradise Kiss, movie available from Geneon" on the cover and let it sell itself.

Mm, I'd almost forgotten about Last Quarter. I really enjoyed the movie, if only for atmosphere, and it sounds like the manga is much better plot-wise...I'd really like to read it.

...Hm, this reminds me I also need to pick up the last volumes of Death Note sometime.
