About:
A former model, Sakai was the lead singer and writer of the 5-member group Zard. After a while all the other members of the group left and the name Zard became synonymous with Sakai.
In June 2006, Sakai was diagnosed with cervical cancer and was receiving chemotherapy at Keio University Hospital where she died on May 27, 2007 after falling 3 meters from an outdoor staircase landing.
