Saint Young Men Manga's Jesus & Buddha Inspire Eyeglasses

posted on by Sarah Nelkin
Glasses include cleaning cloth with Buddha/Jesus t-shirt designs, original case

Eyewear retailer Zoff revealed a line of collaboration glasses as a tie-in with the anime movie of Hikaru Nakamura's Saint Young Men manga on Thursday — the same day the movie opened in Japanese theaters. The retailer will be producing a limited number of Zoff PC Clear Lens Packs that come with an original glasses cloth and original glasses case.

2 kinds of cloths will be available for the pack: One with a “Fish x 2, Bread x 5” logo like the one that appears on Jesus's shirt, and one with the “Gentle Face x 3” (a pun of the word Buddha) logo that appears on Buddha's shirt. The original glasses case will come with designs of Buddhist follower Ananda, the Brahma gods, and the four archangels.

Not incidentally, the movie's voice actor for Jesus, SAKEROCK band leader Mirai Moriyama, wears glasses not too dissimilar to Zoff's Jesus glasses. Here he is posing with Buddha voice actor Gen Hoshino and a sketch that Nakamura drew of both of them:

Glasses packs will come at the price of 3,980 yen (about US$39), and are expected to ship sometime in late July. Pre-orders will begin on May 16.

Noriko Takao (episode director on Clannad, K-ON!, Lucky Star) is directing the Saint Young Men film at A-1 Pictures off a screenplay by Rika Nezu (live-action Kimi ni Todoke, live-action Absolute Boyfriend).

The original manga has sold more than 9.5 million copies. An original anime DVD was bundled with the eighth manga volume in December, and a second anime DVD will ship with the ninth volume in July.
