Yotsuba&!'s Danbo Cardboard Robot Inspires Special Tote Bag

posted on by Karen Ressler
Pouch, carton bag made with "Naoron" paper also available

Japanese clothing maker Animation Addict Store's "You're Such a Nerd" brand is now accepting pre-orders for bags inspired by the cardboard robot suit from Kiyohiko Azuma's slice-of-life series Yotsuba&!. The bags include a tote bag, pouch, and "carton bag," which is a box-shaped lunch bag sized specially to fit Yotsuba&! graphic novels. All three bags are made of a special type of Japanese paper called "Naoron," which is water-resistant and difficult to break. The carton bag and the tote bag are 5,250 yen (about US$52) and the pouch is 2,940 yen (about US$29). Pre-orders are being accepted until June 28.

Comic Natalie has posted more images of the bags on its website.

"Danbo" comes from "danbōru," the Japanese word for "cardboard."

Other merchandise inspired by Danbo include a model kit (with weapons), a photo book, and an Amazon.com variant of the model. Several Amazon staff members wore this version of the robot suit at a gay pride parade in Seattle. Danbo also starred in Blu-ray Disc ads for Jaws and E.T., several stop-motion shorts for Geneon Entertainment's Rondo Robe label, and on Thai TV as the mascot for the television show Little Citizen.
