Making a Living in Manga in Japan with Felipe Smith
Lost in Translation
The film review archive website Rotten Tomatoes has posted a special feature article that arranges, from worst to best-reviewed, the 94 movies in its database that were adapted from comics or manga. Only movies that received twenty or more reviews were included in the list. Each of the selected films was then given an overall score based on a formula derived from the average of its review scores, the total number of reviews it received, and the average score of all of the qualifying titles. Ten of the films, five each anime and live action, are adaptations of manga. The remainder are based on a mix of major comics, newspaper cartoon strips, and lesser-known graphic novels.
The highest-ranking anime in the list, at number 10, is Metropolis, which Rotten Tomatoes lauds for a "dazzling, seemingly effortless blend of traditional and computer animation." It is closely followed by Ghost in the Shell (14). The remaining anime among the ninety-four were Akira (21), Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (36) and Appleseed (75).
