Lucky Star Special Edition DVD Flies off Shelves in Akiba

Special First Edition version of DVD sells out in less than three days

Despite a director change and questions concerning the quality of the Lucky Star anime, Akiba Blog (Note: Some ads on the target webpage are not safe for workplace viewing) is reporting that the special edition of the first DVD of the anime series is selling out quickly.

Amazon Japan has already sold out its entire supply of the DVD. Some major Akihabara retailers, such as Asobit Game City, still had some copies of the DVD on hand late Thursday. However, the majority of the stores with special displays for Lucky Star have run out.

Lucky Star made waves in the Japanese entertainment industry earlier this month when the CD single of the opening theme, "Motteke! Sailor Fuku," hit the number two spot on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart. For an anime theme song that is not performed by a mainstream artist, breaking into Oricon's top ten is rare. Expecting a similar reaction to follow the release of the second Lucky Star DVD, retailers are accepting reservations for the next DVD.
