Shinichiro Watanabe to Speak at Toronto Film Festival

Cowboy Bebop director to present Genius Party anthology, answer questions

On Friday, June 13, Toronto's Worldwide Short Film Festival will host a discussion with Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo director Shinichiro Watanabe. He will travel to the festival to present a screening of the Genius Party anthology of anime shorts, in which he directed the Baby Blue segment, and its sequel, Genius Party Beyond. Both will be shown starting at 7:30 p.m. on June 12 at the Varsity Cinemas in downtown Toronto.

Todd Brown, a writer who has frequently reported on avant-garde anime on the Twitch Film website, will be moderating the talk with Watanabe. The theme of the session will be "What's it like being part of one of Japan's Powerhouse Animation Studios?" and Brown has asked fans of Watanabe and Studio 4°C to submit questions for him to present to the director during the interview.

The Genius Party films bring together 13 of anime's most imaginative directors and have already been shown in North America earlier this year at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Watanabe, as well as fellow directors Kōji Morimoto and Mahiro Maeda, came to the United States to introduce that premiere as well.
