Macross Frontier Movie Launches Shōjo Manga Series

Shōjo manga creator Kariko Koyama has launched Sheryl - Kiss in the Galaxy, a series based on last year's Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime film, in the July issue of Kodansha's Bessatsu Friend magazine on Friday. Shōji Kawamori, the creator of the Macross science-fiction romance franchise and the director of the Macross Frontier movie, is collaborating on the manga's original story. The first manga installment covers the early years of the idol singer character Sheryl Nome in vocal school — a storyline not seen in the animation thus far.

Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime is the first of two films based on the Macross Frontier television series, which is itself a sequel to The Super Dimension Fortress Macross series. There have been several Macross Frontier manga already (including the main manga adaptation in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine and two in Kadokawa's Comp Ace magazines), but none of the previous manga were shōjo. Kadokawa also publishes a quarterly magazine called Macross Ace.

The singing voice of Sheryl Nome, May "May'n" Nakabayashi, will be performing with Megumi Nakajima (Ranka Lee) and a "mystery guest" at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 2.
