Toei's summer vacation story directed by Kônosuke Uda to open on May 19

The Cinema Today website began streaming a one-minute trailer for Toei's Niji-Iro Hotaru ~Eien no Natsu Yasumi~ (Rainbow-Colored Fireflies: The Eternal Summer Vacation) anime film on Monday. The video features Yumi Matsutoya's theme song "Ai to Tooi Hi no Mirai e."

Based on Masayuki Kawaguchi's 2007 novel, the story follows a sixth-grade boy named Yūta who slips back in time 30 years during summer vacation. After his father's death, Yūta tries to reclaim what was lost by experiencing summer activities like insect collecting and fireworks and discovering his first love in a village that should be underwater.

14-year-old drama actor Akashi Takei (Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu, Kamen Rider Decade) will play the protagonist Yūta, and Ayumi Kimura (Permanent Nobara) will play Saeko. Kônosuke Uda (One Piece, Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy) is directing the film, which features an adapted screenplay by Kei Kunii (The Princess Blade live action film), along with character designs and animation direction by Hisashi Mori (Samurai 7).

Niji-Iro Hotaru ~Eien no Natsu Yasumi~ will premiere in Japan on May 19.
