1st film in Jewelpet magical girl franchise to open in Japan on August 8

The Japanese film website Cinema Today began streaming a 62-second trailer for Eiga Jewelpet Sweets Dance Princess, the first film in the Jewelpet magical girl anime franchise, on Friday.

Hiroaki Sakurai (Di Gi Charat, Maid Sama!) will direct the film off of scripts by Takashi Yamada (Inuyasha, Yumeiro Pâtissière). Studio Comet will produce the animation for the film as it has for the previous three television anime series.

The story of the film is set in Sweetsland, a country next to Jewelland. Ruby and the other Jewelpets are celebrating the birthday of Sweetland's Princess Marna with dancing. However, during the preparations for the birthday party, a mysterious object appears from the skies. In the object is a mysterious Sweetspet child named Gumimin.

Sanrio and Sega Toys launched their Jewelpet character and toy line in 2008, and the first Jewelpet anime followed a year later. Each Jewelpet toy is a stuffed animal; in the storyline, these pets belonged to magicians in "Jewelland" and can use magic themselves, thanks to their jewel eyes. They study every day to learn how to use magic.

The film will open in theaters in Japan on August 11. A fourth television series, titled Jewelpet Kira☆Deco—!, premiered on April 7.
