Cygames announced during a stage and live-stream event on Sunday that the anime adaptation of its Granblue Fantasy smartphone game is a television anime series titled Granblue Fantasy the Animation. The series will premiere in January. The anime's official website began streaming the show's first promotional video on Sunday. (Note: the linked video is region-locked to Japan.)

Yuuki Itoh (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid) is directing the anime at A-1 Pictures, and Toshifumi Akai (Kokoro Connect, Sound of the Sky) is designing the characters. Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy games I-XI) and Tsutomu Narita (Final Fantasy XIV composer and arranger) are composing the music. BUMP OF CHICKEN will perform the anime's theme song.

The anime will star:

Yuuki Ono as Gran
Nao Tōyama as Lulia
Rie Kugimiya as Bii
Miyuki Sawashiro as Catalina
Hisako Kanemoto as Jeeta

Cygames released Granblue Fantasy for iOS and Android devices in December 2013. The game features music from Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu and art by Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy IX art designer Hideo Minaba. Cygames previously announced that the game will receive an English version, but the company has not yet released it.

Illustrator Kendi Oiwa (Welcome to the N.H.K., Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag -Kakusei-, Goth) and writer Makoto Fugetsu launched a manga adaptation of the game in April.
