Shinobu Ohtaka's Magi Manga Ends in 4 Chapters

posted on by Karen Ressler
Fantasy manga launched in 2009

Shinobu Ohtaka announced on Shonen Sunday's website on Wednesday that her Magi manga will end in four chapters. A Magi chapter ran in the 43rd issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine on Wednesday, so if there are no breaks the manga will end on October 18.

Ohtaka launched the manga in 2009 after finishing her Sumomomo Momomo manga. Shogakukan published the 35th compiled volume on September 1 and the 36th volume is slated for October 18. The manga was the winner of the Boys' Manga category of the Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2014.

Viz Media licensed the manga and released the 25th volume in North America on August 8. Viz describes the story:

Deep within the desert lie the mysterious Dungeons, vast stores of riches there for the taking by anyone lucky enough to find them and brave enough to venture into the depths from which few have ever returned. Plucky young adventurer Aladdin means to find the Dungeons and their riches, but Aladdin may be just as mysterious as the treasures he seeks.

The manga inspired two 25-episode anime series: Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic in 2012 and the sequel Magi: The Kingdom of Magic in 2013. Yoshifumi Ōtera is drawing an ongoing spinoff manga titled Magi: Adventure of Sinbad, which first debuted as a bonus on the Magi anime's home video release before launching as a full series. The spinoff in turn inspired an original video anime series and a television anime series.

Crunchyroll streamed the Magi anime adaptations as they aired in Japan and Aniplex of America released both on home video. Netflix streamed the Magi: Adventure of Sinbad anime in Japan as it aired and outside of Japan three months later.
