Oscar Eligible Anime Announced

Satoshi Kon going for two; Cowboy Bebop rejected

Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list films that are eligible for the Academy Award (Oscar) for best animated feature. Compared to last years 17 eligible films, only 11 are eligible this year. Satoshi Kon's Millennium Actress, distributed by DreamWorks' Go Fish, and Tokyo Godfathers, distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films' along with Pokèmon Heroes (Miramax) are the anime eligible for the oscar. Tokyo Godfathers eligibility is subject to it opening in Los Angeles before 2004.

Although Hollywood Reporter had suggested that Cowboy Bebop: The Movie had been submitted for consideration, it has been confirmed as being ineligible due to its Japanese release date (September 1st, 2001).

Although eligible for nomination, the movies have not yet been nominated. Since there are less than sixteen eligible entries, only three films will be nominated for the award. Three nominees will be announced on January 27th, followed by the announcement of the winner at the Oscars ceremony on February 29th, 2004.

  • The Jungle Book 2 (Disney)
  • Looney Tunes: Back in Action (Warner Bros.)
  • Go Fish acquisition Millennium Actress (DreamWorks / Go Fish)
  • Piglet's Big Movie (Disney)
  • Pokèmon Heroes (Miramax)
  • Rugrats Go Wild! (Paramount)
  • Tokyo Godfathers (Samuel Goldwyn Films)
  • The Triplets of Belleville. (Sony Pictures Classics)
