On it's own 設定 (settei) refers to these character sheets: http://www.kiddygrade.info/scans/mainchara/ http://www.uta-kata.info/scans/character_main/ Two common uses you see in credits are the two you mention. The person credited with 色彩設定 is presumably the person who turns this into this and for lack of a defined translation here up until now I've been using "color setting". It appears to be interchangeable with 色彩設計 - Satoshi Tsuchiya was credited with 色彩設計 for the Kiddy Grade TV series but with 色彩設定 for the Ignition movie recut.
I was actually looking at this term yesterday as it happens. There are two character designers credited for the Vampire Princess Miyu TV series: キャラクター原案: Narumi Kakinouchi (credited on the DVD as "Original Character Development", although they actually named Toshiki Hirano in error) キャラクター設定: Megumi Kadonosono (credited on the DVD for some reason as "Character Planning") The former originally created the main characters for the manga and OVA, while the latter created the character sheets (設定) for the anime. Kadonosono played a similar part again in the Clannad movie but for Gigantic Formula the roles were actually reversed - Kadonosono is credited with キャラクター原案 while the animation character designer (キャラクターデザイン) was Kouji Yabuno (which is why in that series the characters look more like something out of Kamichu until you get to the ED which was animated by Kadonosono herself). The "Gigantic Formula Original Design Archives" book seems to translate this as "Character base-design" but personally if adding credits I would translate キャラクター原案 to Original Character Design as we currently have in our encyclopaedia for both series. |

Just a note to add to what we have.
I found an old error report made by Yuji Hayami who apparently speaks a degree of English. His name was entered incorrectly (copied from the Tokyopop DVD credits which are riddled with errors) and he also notes: "And my task is more correctly must be called Story Editor. I constructed all series stories." The term used in Japanese was シリーズ構成 (translated by Tokyopop as "Series Structure") Just thought I'd add this as a data point since we don't have this down as a possible translation for that Kanji term. While obviously there is a language barrier, the most obvious/direct translation is not always the correct one and someone who actually does the job knows more about what it actually entails. |

Assistant Producer should be separated from Production Assistant as they are not the same task. This causes problems in cases like Haruhi 2009 renewal English credits. There is only one Assistant Producer but several Production Assistants, and the difference is not easily visible with them merged.

The AIC page directly associating 演出 with storyboarding is a bit misleading. Unless they're talking about Toei who almost always make their 演出 do storyboarding for the episodes they work on, that doesn't hold true for the rest of the anime companies in Japan. [/nitpick]
On a separate note, the encyclopedia isn't translating these tasks when it comes to comparisons. |
