Oscar-nominee Shuhei Morita directs anime of Sui Ishida's suspense horror manga

The official website for the anime of Sui Ishida's suspense horror manga Tokyo Ghoul began streaming the first promotional video on Wednesday. The same video debuted at AnimeJapan last weekend.

The dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious "ghouls" who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight.

Natsuki Hanae (Nagi no Asukara, The Severing Crime Edge) will play the protagonist Ken Kaneki, Sora Amamiya (THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE: Kagayaki no Mukōgawa e!, Wanna Be the Strongest in the World) will play the heroine Tōka Kirishima, and Kana Hanazawa (Kobato., Steins;Gate) will play Rize Kamishiro.

Shuhei Morita (Freedom, Kakurenbo), the Oscar-nominated director of the "Possessions" ("Tsukumo") short, is helming this anime at Pierrot. Kazuhiro Miwa (animation director on EUREKA SEVEN AO, Gosick, Heroman) is designing the characters, and playwright Chūji Mikasano (LDK) is supervising and writing the scripts. Noboru Haraguchi (Heroman, Gosick) is the sound director, and Yutaka Yamada (live-action Marumo no Okite, Hunter ~Sono Onna-tachi, Shōkinkasegi~) is composing the music.

Ishida launched the manga in Weekly Young Jump in 2011, and Shueisha published the 10th compiled book volume last month. The manga sold about 1,666,348 copies last year to be the 27th top-selling manga series, and it has over 2.8 million copies in circulation. Weekly Young Jump posted a special promotional video for the manga last July.

The television anime will premiere this summer.
