Lugia to Appear in 2018 Pokémon Film

posted on by Karen Ressler
Film opens in Japan on July 13

The official website for the Pokémon anime films confirmed on Thursday that Legendary Pokémon Lugia will appear in the franchise's 2018 film. The website shared a visual and explained that Lugia was the shadow that appeared in the earlier teaser video. The website also confirmed that the flute music in the teaser was Lugia's song from the 1999 film Pokémon 2000 - The Movie.

The new film will open in theaters in Japan on July 13.

Wit Studio (Attack on Titan, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) will handle animation production along with the franchise's mainstay studio Oriental Light and Magic. Tetsuo Yajima, the director of this year's Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, is returning to direct the next film, and Shizue Kaneko (If Her Flag Breaks, Pan de Peace!) is designing the characters.

Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (Gekijōban Pocket Monster: Kimi ni Kimeta!), the previous film in the franchise, had its world premiere at the Japan Expo 2017 event in Paris on July 6. The movie then opened in Japan on July 15 and earned 516 million yen (about US$4.61 million) in its first two days to rank at #1 at the box office.
