NieR: Automata's Yoko Taro to Become Virtual Youtuber

posted on by Kim Morrissy

The second NieR:Automata anniversary livestream on February 20 revealed that the game's director Yokō Tarō will become a virtual Youtuber this month. The quirky developer, who is known for always wearing an Emil mask from NieR in public, will appear on Square Enix's virtual idol group Gems Company's Virtual Cast VRadio show, which streams on Tuesdays at 8:00pm JST on Nico Nico Douga.

Although Yokō Tarō was not present for the stream, he had told Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito that he was thinking of dabbling in YouTube "let's plays" and wanted to stream PlatinumGames's Astral Chain. According to Saito, Yokō Tarō had already been considering making YouTube videos using a puppet, but Saito suggested that they may as well use a 3D model of Emil and try out virtual Youtubing. The two of them stressed that this is purely an experiment, however Yokō Tarō insists that he has been practicing really hard for YouTube.

During the stream, Gems Company and NieR:Automata music composer Keiichi Okabe joked that he might write a song for the idol unit to sing, to which Yokō Tarō jokingly replied, “I'll sing too.” Could this also be Yokō Tarō's debut as a singer?

Saito promised that more information will be released on social media at a later date.
