2008's Top Domestic Movies at Japanese Box Office (Updated)

posted on by Egan Loo
Ponyo, Hana Yori Dango Final topped all films, including Indy, Red Cliff

Not only were Hayao Miyazaki's animated Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea film and Yasuharu Ishii's live-action Hana Yori Dango Final film the highest grossing Japanese films in 2008, but they earned more at the Japanese box office than any foreign film last year. Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull finished with 5.71 billion yen (about US$61.5 million) below these two, as did John Woo's Red Cliff Part I with 4.8 to 5 billion yen (US$52-54 million).
