U.K. Cinema Screening Round Up

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Numerous anime screenings round the country in the remainder of November.

There are numerous anime and manga-related screenings in Britain over the remainder of November. Firstly, Scotland Loves Animation is holding countrywide screenings of anime films on Saturday November 26, with an extra London screening on Sunday November 27. Most cinemas will show some or all of the following anime: Tekken: Blood Vengeance (pictured), Mardock Scramble: The First Compression, Mardock Scramble: The Second Combustion, and Kids Club screenings of Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva. According to the press release, there will also be prizes and special offers. The cinemas are listed in full at the bottom of this story.

Also, there will be two screenings of Hatsune Miku's concert film, "Hatsune Miku Live Party 2011 39's LIVE in SAPPORO," at London's Apollo Piccadilly cinema, on Monday November 28 and Tuesday November 29. Both screenings can be booked from the cinema website. The screening on the 28th is at 6.30 p.m. and the screening on the 29th is at 8.30 p.m. Tickets are £18 for adults and £15 for children, students and senior citizens.

Of the other U.K. screenings, the Zipangu Fest is showing experimental anime in London until Wednesday November 23, full details here.

The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival will be held in Cardiff on Friday November 25 and Saturday November 26. The Saturday will see a screening of Redline (6 p.m.) and a morning showing of Arrietty (11 a.m.), along with two anime fantasy films from 2006, Satoshi Kon's Paprika (pictured) at 1 p.m. and Goro Miyazaki's Tales from Earthsea at 3 p.m. The Saturday films will be shown at the Chapter Arts Centre, directions here. These screenings can be booked at this page (click "Saturday 26" on the calendar on the right). On Friday, there will be a free screening (6 p.m.) of Japanese short animated films at the ATRiuM building on Adam Street (map available here). A full line-up is given here

On Sunday November 27, the Barbican in London will screen Legend of the Millennium Dragon, originally called Onigamiden, at 4 p.m. Tickets are £9.50 online or £10.50 full price (concessions £8.50, Barbican members £7.50/£8.50). Directed by Hirotsugu Kawasaki (Spriggan) and produced by Studio Pierrot, Legend of the Millennium Dragon revolves around a 15-year-old boy who travels back in time — over 1,200 years ago to the Heian period — and faces a war between oni (demons) and humans in the former Japanese capital of Kyoto. The anime adapts a 2004 two-volume novel from author Takafumi Takada.

Also on Sunday November 27, the BFI Southbank in London will screen the animated film Tatsumi at 3.50 p.m. The screening can be booked here, tickets £9.50, concessions available. While Tatsumi was made in Singapore, it is about the pioneering manga artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi, who wrote adult ("gekiga") stories in strip form. Directed by Eric Khoo, the film adapts five of Tatsumi's manga stories, threaded together with Tatsumi's account of his struggle to make a living after World War II. (The autobiographical material comes from Tatsumi's manga, A Drifting Life.)

The Tatsumi screening is part of the BFI's onedotzero festival, which also includes j-star 11, an anthology of "some of the most surprising and inspiring music videos, motion graphics and animated shorts" from Japan. The j-star 11 screening on November 25 is booked out, but screenings on Saturday 26 (8.30 p.m.) and Sunday 27 (6.10 p.m.) can be booked here. As with the Tatsumi screening, tickets are £9.50, with concessions available.
