Tiger & Bunny's Satou directs George Akiyama's story of child in famine in medieval Japan

The official website for Keiichi Satou (Tiger & Bunny, Karas) and Toei's feature film adaptation of George Akiyama's Asura manga began streaming two videos — with animated excerpts from the film — this weekend.

The first video is an interview with Yasuha Kominami, the singer of the film's theme song. The second video is a preview for another interview with Masako Nozawa, the voice actress of the title character. Nozawa's interview will debut on June 8.

The unrelentingly dark drama of Asura follows the struggles of a child during a famine in medieval Japan. His mother was so impoverished and starved that she tried to eat Asura at the beginning of the story. In addition to Nozawa, Asura stars Megumi Hayashibara, Kinya Kitaōji, Kappei Yamaguchi, and Tesshô Genda. The film will open in Japan on September 29. Asura is also competing at France's Annecy this week.
