The 29-year-old Canadian citizen originally entered Japan as an international student, and she held a student visa to stay in Japan from 2012 to 2016. Wong has been variously reported as a restaurant worker and sex industry worker. She and Sasaki were acquainted through a cosplay event held in Shinjuku's Kabukichō district. Wong reportedly has interests in Lolita fashion and cosplay, which contributed to her desire to stay in Japan.
Wong allegedly approached Sasaki in June 2016 to propose a fake marriage with no intention of living with Sasaki as a married couple. Sasaki allegedly agreed to the proposition under the terms that Wong would initially pay him 700,000 yen (about US$6,260), followed by an additional 30,000 yen (about US$270) each month.
The arrangement was discovered through the Tokyo Immigration Bureau in February. Wong and Sasaki allegedly registered their falsified marriage through a ward office in Yokohama on June 17, 2016. After investigating, the immigration officedetermined that Wong and Sasaki were not living as a married couple.
