Gundam 00 Film, Live-Action Beck Dated for September (Updated)

posted on by Egan Loo

The March issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Newtype magazine has confirmed on Wednesday that the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 anime movie will open in Japan in September. The theatrical spinoff to the two seasons of Sunrise's Mobile Suit Gundam 00 anime series was previously dated for "Fall 2010" by a Barks news report last month.

Bandai Entertainment is releasing the two television seasons on DVD in North America, and the American television network Sci Fi ran them in 2008 and 2009.

The Eiga.com website reports that Yukihiko Tsutsumi's live-action film adaptation of Harold Sakuishi's Beck rock-and-roll manga will open on September 4. The official website is still streaming 30 seconds of the latest footage from the film.

Hiro Mizushima (Absolute Boyfriend, Hana Zakari no Kimitachi e: Ikemen Paradise, Lovely Complex) plays the charismatic guitarist and band leader Ryusuke Minami, while Takeru Satoh (Princess Princess D, Kamen Rider Den-O, Rookies) plays the ordinary high school boy Koyuki. After a chance encounter between these two, Koyuki joins Minami's five-person rock band, Beck, on its rise to stardom. Tokyopop published the first 12 manga volumes in North America, and Funimation completed its release of 2004-2005's BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad anime version in 2008.

Update: According to Eiga.com, it has been 19 years since the last time there was an animated Gundam film with all-new content (not counting films in specialty venues such as Gundam the Ride: A Baoa Qu, Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers, and Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War). The last feature-length Gundam animated film with all-new content was 1991's Mobile Suit Gundam F91.
