What is this?

No one is more enamored with magic than Prince Lloyd de Saloum. A commoner reborn as a prince with an immense magical potential, he dedicates his days to learning everything he possibly can about magic. His current particular fascination is the divine sorcery that's largely found within the church.

I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince So I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability Season 2 is based on the light novel series by author Kenkyo na Circle and illustrator Meru. The anime series is streaming on Crunchyroll on Wednesdays.

You know what, if I was just hanging out, and some entitled kid appeared before me and started demanding that I teach him magic, I just might think about throwing one of the Swords of Revealing Light at him, too especially if I'm an angel and not beholden unto any earthly powers (EX: royalty, in Lloyd's case) then literally who would Lloyd be to just barge in, uninvited, demanding to be taught divine sorcery. Sure, we'd eventually learn that it can weirdly be learned in a flash (we'll get to that), but Lloyd doesn't know that! Lloyd went up there, truly hoping that whoever was up there would be benevolent enough to go through the long, painstaking process of teaching him an entire branch of magic from scratch. I don't even blame Jihriel for getting mad—who wouldn't be?

But of course, one explosive fight later, and it turns out that divine sorcery in its entirety can be learned instantaneously. I'm sure I don't need to say plainly how anticlimactic that is—in fairness to the show, even Lloyd says as much. Still, that doesn't make it any less boring from an audience standpoint. Yes, this means the story can progress faster, but I think the reason this irks me so much is that it echoes my biggest criticism of the first season of this show. It keeps billing itself as a show about someone learning magic, and yet, despite the expectation it creates, it's mostly just magic fights. And that's very much exemplified—taken to its most extreme yet, really—in this very episode.

Still, we got something of interest in the segment where Babylon meets the person who's very obviously being set up as—well, ostensibly our antagonist. I say “ostensibly” because if this anime remains true to form, then Lloyd's not going to view him as an obstacle, as much as he is a prospective teacher. And while it can sometimes add to the excitement in an anime fight when one side doesn't even register it as a full-blown battle, let alone anything worthy of their full power, I just don't think 7th Prince here quite has the recipe for that secret sauce.

Episode 13 Rating:

Right off the bat, a content warning for this episode for sexual assault. There's a scene where some thugs are harassing one of Lloyd's sisters that we're only now meeting, and a generously endowed friend of hers tries to help her. In response, the thugs then grab the friend, and forcefully grope her.

The show doesn't really give the situation a lot of gravity, and plays it off pretty lightly—as though everyone forgot it even happened 5 minutes later. It doesn't progress the story whatsoever, tells us nothing about any of the involved characters, and ends up coming off like a throwaway event—as though it's just there to fill time. I'd say “shock value” but again: this anime doesn't treat this event like a huge deal. If it really was meant to splash in some shock value, the only thing I'm shocked at is how poorly it went about it. If you actually want it to feel legitimately shocking, the characters have to realize that a terrible thing is happening before their very eyes—yet no one seems too terribly concerned. The most that happens is the priest whines about how the recital is ruined now, but that's about it. None of this is to say anime can't have moments where characters get groped or sexually assaulted, just that there's a way to go about it, and this apathetic nonsense most certainly isn't it.

But even before this happened, frankly, I wasn't terribly impressed by this episode. Basically, after the events of season 1, Lloyd decides to join the church to learn more about divine sorcery. It's here that we're introduced to another one of his sisters, who is to music what Lloyd is to magic. In other words, if you were holding out hope that the show has perhaps moved beyond being a by-the-books power fantasy, alas, it hasn't. To its credit, though, the animation looks marginally better—especially during a(n otherwise unimpressive) concert scene toward the end of the episode. So there's that, at least.

All in all, this episode didn't inspire hope that the second season of 7th Prince is going to be at all substantially different from the first season. Which is great news if you enjoyed the first season, of course. As for me, especially in such a stacked season of anime, I'm not exactly going to be counting down the days until episode 2.
