The Click
October 14th - October 20th

by Brian Hanson,

Salutations, companions in couchpotato-ry! Like the ebb and flow of the universe, The Click brings its surly self along for another week of mirth, merriment, and TV listings. The usual forewarning: as you travail this tubular passageway of television data, remember that all dates and times are tentative, and all times listed are Eastern. Yes, even the Canadian ones. They have time zones up there. And caribou.

Before we begin, allow me to be thankful that, given the nature of my column, I'm able to deftly avoid several of the current hot-button issues pressing the vocal message-board-dwelling anime throngs. Stuff like lolicon, yaoi, convention-related drama happenings, what have you. Television has an amazing capacity to filter away any and all material the "soccer moms" and "latte-sipping hipsters" might find undesirable, leaving only a husk of soulless quasi-entertainment that brain dead simpletons like myself can then spend hours gawking at.

Nonetheless, I simply cannot help my seething desire to entrench myself in all these dark, divisive issues like some bug-eyed CNN opinionist! Now, I know most of you are non-retarded enough to recognize that all opinions stated by me are mine and not of my employers, so I won't bother to go over it again. Except for the fact that I just did.

Loli: I looked this up on dictionary.com, and it directed me to an acronym that is short for "Lists of Lists International." How keen! I should send them a postcard, since I am, given what this here column is, a fan of lists. Hopefully it has nothing at all to do with lolicon, the subculture of choice for pedos-in-training.

Eh, let's just get on with the TV stuff.

Special Combat Unit: Shinesman
(Encore Action)
-Sunday October 15 5:45am - Episode 1
-Sunday October 15 6:15am - Episode 2

Ah, six years ago. A marvelous time where I, unaltered by the effects of male pattern baldness and full of unrequited, newfound zeal for Japanese anime, happened across Media Blaster's dub of the two-part "Sentai" OAV, Shinesman.

"No way, man! Dubs are a bastardization of the original Japanese language!" Ho ho! I was so naive then. "But!" the internet message boards cried, "this dub is a parody! It's meant to be funny!" A novel concept, and an intriguing one.

Not to mention somewhat self-defeating, since the original Shinesman was, in itself, a lighthearted parody of goofy Japanese superhero shows in the vein of Power Rangers and the like. Multicolored costumes, crazy monsters, Kageyama Hironobu's swaggering, sultry voice pulsating throughout every scene.

And here we are in the year twenty-oh-six: I had completely forgotten of this title's very existence, and there it lay, early in the morning on a low-rated third-tier cable channel, waiting for someone like me to find it and hold it up to the light of the masses. Only, sort of. I make no promises that Shinesman is actually good anymore; for all my nostalgic ramblings, I honestly can't remember if it was actually funny or not. And even if it were, would today's anime-viewing audience actually laugh at jokes like, "she's one OAV short of a series"? They don't even make OAV series anymore. Well, maybe a few, but certainly a far cry from the glut that permeated anime fandom of decades past.

It's odd, it's certainly the weirdest anime on TV this week, and that's why it's my Click Pick of the Week.

The rest:

PREMIERES:

Basilisk
(Razer)
Thursday October 19 5:30pm - Episode 16 "First Impressions" (Repeats Fri Oct 20 12:30am, 1:00pm)

Remember the Kouga and Iga ninja clans, and how they really hated each other and tried to kill each other in order to acquire sacred scrolls and earn support from the Shogunate and stuff? If you do, congratulations on your Japanese History undergraduate degree. For the rest of us, this episode of Basilisk involves those two ninja Odd Couples as they attempt to unite their warring factions with an arranged wedding. Sounds like a recipe... for disaster!

Bleach
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday October 15 12:30am - Episode 6 (Repeats Sun Oct 15 3:30am)

Why doesn't Bleach have any actual episode titles? The answer is twofold. One - Viz hasn't released them. Two - they don't list them anywhere in the episode, anyway. Episode Six of Bleach involves Rukia's trip to the unusual Soul Reaper supplier, one Kisuke Urahara. He's definitely more than he seems but is generally more interested in selling his wares to the desperate Rukia, who's in dire need of a solution to the problem wherein Ichigo's body, with his soul out and about fighting hollows, tends to collapse to the ground and lie unconscious and vulnerable.

(YTV)
Friday October 20 10:30pm - Episode 7

Episode Seven of Bleach involves the result of Rukia's purchase from Urahara's Soul Reaper shop, a temporary "mod soul" wherein it temporarily resides and controls Ichigo's body while Ichigo is free to kick Hollow ass. Unfortunately, the "mod soul" is a little temperamental and full of 'tude.

Eureka 7
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday October 15 1:00am - Episode 25 "World's End Garden" (Repeats Sun Oct 15 4:00am)

With Charles' and Ray's Big Big Secret out in the open, Renton flees and attempts to rejoin the Gekko to spread the news and reunite with his would-be beau, Ehh-ooh-rechh-ka. Unfortunately, it's awfully difficult to catch up to an airborne ship on foot, which the young lad soon discovers.

(YTV)
Friday October 20 9:30pm - Episode 8 "Glorious Brilliance"

Renton joins Ehh-ooh-rechh-ka and her trio of adopted moppets on a routine shopping trip, wherein they encounter a delightful older lady named Tiptory, who offers them tea and radical, anti-establishment rhetoric.

Fullmetal Alchemist
(YTV)
Friday October 20 10:00pm - Episode 33 "Al, Captured" (Repeats Sat Oct 21 1:00am)

Greed and his chimera cronies capture Al, causing Ed to panic and Izumi to join in the rescue operation.

G.I. Joe Sigma 6
(4KidsTV)
Saturday October 14 10:30am - Episode 19 "Trap"

Sadly, this episode is not about Star Wars character and runaway internet forum sensation Admiral Ackbar; rather, Destro captures the Joes in a vicious trap involving radiation or some such thing.

(YTV)
Saturday October 14 12:30pm - Episode 6 "Race"

I'm not a big fan of Gonzo's slick G.I. Joe upgrade, but I do think their overly buxom redesign for Baroness is a marked improvement. Here, she races against the Joes for a... McGuffin.

Inuyasha
(Cartoon Network)
-Tuesday October 17 12:30am - Episode 160 "The Lucky But Two-Timing Scoundrel" (Repeats Tue Oct 17 4:00am)
-Wednesday October 18 12:30am - Episode 161 "Miroku's Past Mistake" (Repeats Wed Oct 18 4:00am)
-Thursday October 19 12:30am - Episode 162 "Forever With Lord Sesshomaru" (Repeats Thu Oct 19 4:00am)
-Friday October 20 12:30am - Episode 163 "Kohaku, Sango, and Kirara: The Secret Flower Garden" (Repeats Fri Oct 20 4:00am)

Adult Swim's big end-of-Inuyasha blowout begins this week, and proudly displays: bicycle-related romantic arguments between Inuyasha and Kagome, Rin's somewhat creepy admiration of the much-older Sesshomaru, and a flashback episode to Sango and Kohaku's childhood.

(YTV)
Friday October 20 9:00pm - Episode  "Miroku's Past Mistake" (Repeats Sat Oct 21 2:00am)

YTV similarly brings the Inuyasha love with Miroku encountering an old acquaintance. A lady acquaintance. Sango gets jealous, faces are slapped, laughs are had.

Oban Star-Racers
(Toon Disney)
Monday October 16 9:00pm - Episode 18 "Monstrous Like Muir" (Repeats Tue Oct 17 1:30am, Fri Oct 20 9:00pm, Sat Oct 21 1:30am)

I have no idea who Muir is or why he or she is particularly monstrous, but I'll be damn sure to watch and find out! All of you should, too.

One Piece
(YTV)
Friday October 20 7:30pm - Episode 33 "It Takes a Thief" (Repeats Sat Oct 21 3:00am)

I normally don't fall into the trap of obsessing over edits made to sanitize anime for the US kiddie market, but even I found this episode to be downright irritating. A two-parter focusing on Nami's adoptive mother, Bellemere, is basically cut down to a one-parter, guns are replaced by a very menacing pointy finger, and other fun bits of censorship.

Pokemon
(Cartoon Network)
-Saturday October 14 9:00am - Episode 427 "From Cradle to Save"
-Saturday October 14 9:30am - Episode 428 "Time-Warp Heals All Wounds!"

Question: when faced with the odds of trying to keep an animated series based upon the flimsy premise of collecting a set number of tiny, violence-prone creatures, how do you, after over four-hundred episodes, keep things fresh and exciting?

Simple! You don't! This week: there's a highly-original NINJA SCHOOL for Pokemon, which Ash and co. visit and such. Later, May chases an escaped rogue Pokemon down the rabbit hole and ends up traveling backwards in time.

Samurai 7
(Razer)
Thursday October 19 5:00pm - Episode 16 "The Storm" (Repeats Fri Oct 20 12:00am, 12:30pm)

With the dim haze of a rainstorm looming overhead, the bandits descend upon Kanna village like a vicious bird of prey, causing a battle so intense the very survival of The Samurai lies in question. Epic!

Trinity Blood
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday October 15 12:00am - Episode 6 "Sword Dancer" (Repeats Sun Oct 15 3:00am)

Father Hugue, alias "Sword Dancer," investigates a murder on holy ground in Amsterdam. For those of you waiting for jokes about pot or whores... I honestly can't think of any. At least, none which wouldn't prompt litigation.

(Razer)
Thursday October 19 6:00pm - Episode 16 "The Night Lords II: Twilight of the Capital" (Repeats Fri Oct 20 1:00am, 1:30pm)

Father Abel Nightroad finds himself in yet another crazy mix-up, and there's an Imperial Council and a creepy kid and a whole bunch of other stuff!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters
(4KidsTV)
Saturday October 14 9:00am - Episode "Trial of Light and Shadow"

Yugi and company, still trapped in the nightmarish (but in a fun way) world of Capsule Monsters, become stranded on a floating island and face a creature that gains strength from the sun. Klaus Nomi?

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
(Cartoon Network)
-Monday October 16 5:30pm - Episode 76 "Taken By Storm, Part 2"
-Tuesday October 17 5:30pm - Episode 77 "J-Dawg and T-Bone"

Perhaps I've ranted on this subject before, and perhaps a few dozen times before that, but I feel I need to make the point again, mainly because I had Oreo crumbs on my mouth that time and nobody took me seriously. I rather resent the notion that children are far too stupid or inattentive to notice and/or care when cartoon shows randomly cycle between repeats and premieres in brief spurts. However, I care very little about Yu-Gi-Oh, so I guess my rage is neutered somewhat.

This week: Syrus and Tyranno continue to get their duel on and such; later, Jaden makes a new friend that turns out to be a bitter enemy! Don't ask me what the hell is up with that title, because I have no idea.

Zatch Bell
(YTV)
Friday October 20 8:30pm - Episode 41 "Invincible Kanchome"

Kanchome fights and battles and engages in fisticuffs-like combatsmanship against the evil Fredo and his equally evil mamodo, Bargo, who holds Kanchome's recent sister figure hostage. Peril!

MOVIES/SPECIALS

Karas: The Prophecy
(Encore Action)
Saturday October 14 12:00am (Repeats Sat Oct 14 9:50am)

This is one of those projects wherein the production company, in this case the long-revered Tatsunoko, eager to prove their relevance as a cutting edge animation studio, throw tons and tons of money at something without much of a script behind it. But, damned if it isn't really pretty.

Princess Mononoke
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday October 14 7:00pm

In case you were wondering why there aren't any new episodes of Naruto this week, you have your answer! Now, why would I pick something like Shinesman over Miyazaki's epic masterpiece? Because you've already seen it. Perhaps once, twice, possibly more. I myself saw the film exactly three times throughout its limited run in US theaters. Here at The Click, I have a very strict criteria for what ends up on the front page, which is a patent-pending formula involving, among other things, lots of whiskey.

Pokemon: Jirachi Wish Maker
(Cartoon Network)
Wednesday October 18 11:30am

I have two kid siblings, and at some point I know that I sat down with them and watched this movie, but I'll be damned if I can't remember a single thing about it. I know that there's Pokemon, Team Rocket runs about, and no doubt some kind of lesson is learned.

Kai Doh Maru
(Encore Action)
Sunday October 15 8:30am (Repeats Sun Oct 15 7:05pm, Fri Oct 20 7:15am, 4:20pm)

(expletive deleted)

The Weathering Continent
(Encore Action)
Wednesday October 18 6:35pm

(expletive deleted)

The usual list of repeats is what follows, and for more joke-makings and list-listings, I'll be back next week!
