I did mention that though not in as much detail. I suspect it falls on deaf ears anyway. For future users, it probably is a good idea to make the options we mentioned a bit more visible. Like somehow make it so the forum reaches through the user's computer and staples the list to their forehead. We could even let the mods do that to blow off some steam. In all seriousness it's probably as visible as we can make it, but maybe there's something we can do to better organize and present it? |

I have to agree, the info in the first three posts is very helpful but it is spread out too much and full of out-dated off-site resources and a significant portion is the same as it was when it was written 5 years ago.
Basically the first post (or maybe this entire thread) needs to be almost completely replaced. If it doesn't seem too disrespectful, completely omit the content of Azathrael's OP because it really was only written for people at that time. You need an initial post that places all of the important info concisely and to the point, all excess taken away and condensing the separate introductions. Here's an edit I just made... does anything else really need to be in an introductory post? ________________________________________________________________________________ The ANN forum has adopted a zero tolerance policy on creating recommendation threads, instead we have collected these suggestions on how to find anime without opening new ones. Between the official recommendation threads indexed here and the many resources that ANN offer we feel there is no reason to clutter the forum with excessive threads that don't produce meaningful new discussion. In short, you may not open threads whose purpose is ask something like "can you recommend me a show like [so and so]?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Official Recommendation Threads by Genre: Genre Descriptions by Dan42 Action Adventure Child-Safe Comedy Drama Erotica Fantasy Halloween Horror Magic Mystery Psychological Romance Slice-of-Life Science Fiction Supernatural Thriller Tournament War[/quote] There is one exception to the ban on recommendation threads. If you don't see the specific genre you're looking for, you will be allowed to ask about a single title only. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANN Resources: ANN's genre search The ability to search according to year, genre, and ratings make this search engine one of the best anime hunting tools. Genre search tips: - avoid checking genres that are side by side The encyclopedia is separating them to improve precision. - by using the production year alone, you gain access to vintage lists. By typing the same year on both fields, you can see the best rated titles released in a specific year. Searching by decade is also recommended. - on each encyclopedia page that includes genre and theme information there is a link that says "find similar anime based on genres & themes" which will link to a list of similarly themed shows, organized by rating. ANN's Top 10 lists, with each category being expandable into larger lists. ANN users' thread of top 10 best and top 5 worst. ANN Reviews ANN's "MyAnime" lists browse the public lists of ANN members. If you create your own My Anime page there's an option to "See other people's anime lists" which allows you to search "like-minded" members' lists. Which means that you'll be given lists of people who rated the same shows you did in a similar fashion and you can see what else they like. ---------------------- Specific links to My Anime lists, for those who might be familiar/curious with the tastes and interests of a particular user: 8daze abunai Amasa animebrainyanic B3rning14 (French) bahamut75 bci110 BombDiggady braves Captain X cardcaptormanda Chrno2 Circle Cloe Code001 coffee Crusty567 CyberViper d.yaro Daemonblue Darc_knight Dargonxtc (Allow 60 seconds load time) Deadmangunner Descent123 Desert_Kitsune Dhaerwo dormcat Drenoss dummyacct7 Elfen12 endlessnow EternalDragonWarrior Fallout2man fighterholic Flaed FlashFumo fragthecullen free2slap freewingsonata frentymon fullmetal biologist Ggultura2764 gnollman gnuoy goblinm hentaichan Highway Star iankennard IchigoK90 ikillchicken jsevakis Keonyn Kruszer (may contain spoilers) LydiaDianne ManOfRust Mylene one3rd PantsGoblin Selenta Xuebaochai Tony K. undeadben Zalis116 Zaphdash ---------------------------------------- __________________________________________________________________________________ I didn't include any of the links to offsite resources, they really clutter up the pages and most are very much out of date. Maybe those recommendations should be updated and placed in Zalis' post? And I have to ask about the " you will be allowed to ask about a single title only." rule, is that still in effect? and what exactly does it mean? |

It's similar to the "What Are You Considering Buying" thread in the retail section, except it's for asking about specific shows. So if I wanted to ask about people's opinions on, say, Mahormatic, I could start a thread asking the community how good/amazing it is. We're just not allowed to ask for shows like Mahoromatic. Also, could we add an "Underrated Shows" and "Old Shows (70s, 80s, maybe early 90s)" recommendation threads? For underrated shows it'd include shows that have less than 400 views, but a score higher than, say, 7.3, which is a pretty good bench mark. The Encyclopedia has a top 50 for underrated shows, but it's extremely limited and, honestly, too mathematical. Those shows aren't so much underrated as much as they are extremely obscure and have a couple good ratings. Old Shows would be for people like me that enjoy picking out oldies to watch and is pretty self-explanatory, I think. |

Spastic Minnow, I liked what I saw from your last post so I took you up on your proposal. I edited what you wrote a little bit (your wording was a little awkward in places) and made it the new OP.
One thing I did change was that "single title" bit. It now states that if you don't see the genre you're checking for, you can seek Moderator approval to start a recommendation thread for that Genre.
I don't see much of a need for an Old Shows thread, but I'd be fine with an Underrated Shows thread using the criteria that you established. Feel free to start one. |

I definitely feel a bit too proud of myself for having that adopted. And I completely understand the awkward speech thing, a common problem it is for me. I wouldn't be surprised if some other small tweaks are implemented when you or other mods look over it again. such as... "In short, you may not open threads whose purpose is to ask something like "can you recommend me a show like [so and so]?" stupid typo. It was a quicker edit than you might think. |

This thread provides all sorts of links to already-established recommendation threads, including genre-by-genre breakdowns. Or you can use the Genre Search option on the Search function (on the Encyclopedia tab), which can also do themes and can be set to report options by ranking - essentially the same as recommendations. There's even a "find similar anime based on genre" option on the individual Encyclopedia pages, so if you want a "something like xxxx" request then you can just use that. Unless there's something extremely specific that you're looking for, that should cover the overwhelming majority of recommendation requests. If you do want something too specific to be covered by the above options, or want something that simply isn't covered by the above options (we do have a couple of genre gaps), then state it here and we'll see if we can't direct you properly. Ok, thanks.
Well what I'm searching is kind of "extremely specific" like you say. I'm looking for an anime in which the hero is a teenager. And I want that teenager to have a sort of initiatory journey, like he begins the anime with a very childish attitude but ends it by being more mature passing through obstacle and questionning himself. I'm thinking of a character like Naota in FLCL, Umeo in the manga Evil Heart or Makoto from Ghost Hound. But, I don't want characters like Shinji or Simon who are more annoying than interesting. Thanks. |

I am looking for the same as the previous poster, only I'm looking for the newer stuff, more or less that is currently running on Japanese TV. I've seen most of the classic shows and movies from AS and SciFi (whatever prompted them to dumb down their name?). I was hoping for some personnel recommendations, but from what I'm seeing there's lists for individual posters?

I need help in finding a mystery. It's a doctor who solves crimes. it has so much blood (maybe not i was young when i watched it) and i think the first scene of the opening is the doctor standing in front of a body doing either a surgery or an autopsy. It's not black jack, and it's not monster. PM me if you know

BarryB, the correct place for a request to ID a specific title is the Identifying Anime stickied thread. Post your request there and you'll be much more likely to get a response.

Hi everyone,
I've registered specifically because I need some help looking for a specific type of anime and you guys might be able to help. Now everyone has their tastes and you may find mine disgusting/offensive but if you can hep I'd appreciate it. :p I have four main criteria, and they all need to be satisfied (hence the difficulty in my searches): 1) Uncompromising violence, great action, etc. The more blood and gore the better, as long as it is done well and not silly. 2) Uncompromising nudity/sex. A couple of pathetic fan service scenes aren't gonna do it. I don't mind if it is hentai, as long as it satisfies the other 3 criteria, which most hentai do not. 3) Uncompromising production quality. This means great art and animation. I'm not after amateur or cheap work. I'm after anime that looks amazing. 4) A compelling story that doesn't insult my intelligence. Good narrative, interesting characters, etc. I realise that even after I've explained my criteria, you may not be exactly sure what I'm after, so let me give you some examples. Wicked City Daughters of Mnemosyne Mezzo Forte Kite Elfen Lied Urotsukidoji There are problems with each title above but they give you an idea of what I'm after. In fact, my tastes are so electic, it doesn't even have to be anime (i.e. could be western animation) but I find anime is closer than anything else. Here is what I'm NOT after: - Ninja Scroll (great movie, just not enough sex in this special genre I'm after) - Most hentai (if I wanted to watch mind numbing porn, I'll actually watch porn thank you very much! Besides most hentai are done on the cheap and have pretty bad art and animation) So, does anyone think they can help me out? Thanks in advance. EDIT: Mods, if my request is obscure enough, could you please use this post to start a thread? Or let me know so I could start a thread. |

Urotsukidoji, you're going to find it very hard to get a new match for all four of your criteria because you've pretty much seen all of the shows which conform to those standards. The movie Mardock Scramble (see the review for it here) is probably your best remaining bet in anime, as anything else I can think of is seriously deficient in one or more of your criteria. You'll find that kind of thing a bit more readily if you look into hentai and doujinshi manga, where there's some really extreme stuff which should easily meet your standards.
