Kadokawa's Historical Manga Series Adds Black Lagoon, Kemono Friends More Artists

Publisher Kadokawa Shoten launched the next round of its non-fiction manga line Manga Jinbutsu-den (literally: Manga Biographies) on Thursday. The first two new books focus on the lives of daimyō Toyotomi Hideyoshi and nurse Florence Nightingale with cover illustrations by Nanahiko Takagi (Angolmois: Genkō Kassen-ki) and Noizi Ito (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya).
Four more manga biographies will follow, focusing on popular Eastern and Western icons like Masamune Date, samurai Saigō Takamori, Anne Frank, and Walt Disney. The Date and Takamori biographies are slated for November 30 with art by Hiroyuki Asada (Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee) and Rei Hirose (Black Lagoon, Re:CREATORS). The Anne Frank and Walt Disney books are slated for January with art by You Shiina (Sagrada Reset) and Mine Yoshizaki (Sgt. Frog, Kemono Friends).
Kadokawa's previous books featured art by Tadashi Hiramatsu (Yuri!!! on Ice), Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross) and Kazuma Kaneko (Megami Tensei series) Kouhaku Kuroboshi (Kino's Journey's) and Okama (Himawari!).
The Manga Jinbutsu-den series targets children and is the second in Kadokawa Shoten's educational manga series after its Nihon no Rekishi (History of Japan) line launched in 2015. Nihon no Rekishi was very popular with Japanese readers and sold over three million copies.
Publisher Shueisha began re-releasing its Learning Japanese History Through Manga series last year with art by its popular creators like Tite Kubo, Masashi Kishimoto, Hirohiko Araki, and Sui Ishida.
