The Japanese automotive news site Response began streaming a 30-second commercial on Thursday for the six-minute anime short that anime studio Production I.G. is making in collaboration with the global luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz.
The anime short is set in Tokyo in the near future. The three protagonists go on a high-speed pursuit of "a certain" target in the new A-Class car. Mercedes-Benz's official Japanese site will present the anime short to tie into its "Next A-Class" campaign for the new generation of compact cars. The full short will premiere on Saturday.
Mizuho Nishikubo (Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai, Zillion) directed the anime with animator Kazuchika Kise (Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Blood+). Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children) designed the characters, and Kenji Kawai (Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, Gantz, Mobile Suit Gundam 00) scored the music.
During the Fuji Sprint Cup 2012 race from Friday to Sunday, an SLS AMG GT3 car will be wrapped with the "Next A-Class" art. After the six-minute anime short, I.G and Mercedes-Benz are planning to continue the collaboration in December and beyond.
