Appleseed (manga) | Masterpiece |
Words can't describe how thoroughly I enjoyed this manga. It has absolutely everything; characters who manage to be deep as well as fun, a romance that's not overly melodramatic and silly, an intriguing storyline, beautifully detailed art, and of course, hot chicks with guns! Appleseed is like an action story for those of us who like a bit of intelligence in our characters and storylines; while there's a fair amount of blowing stuff up, there are also scenes featuring some very realistic character development and interaction. Deunan and Briareos especially just kill me with fluff sometimes; they're almost like the more sarcastic forerunners of Motoko and Batou. It's a shame Shirow-san abandoned this manga after four volumes. I want more!
Chobits (manga) | Good |
At eight volumes, this is the sort of series you could sit down with and finish in a single night; in fact, that's how I read it. The story was interesting and the art was lovely, but ultimately I didn't really feel much sympathy for all involved, except maybe Freya (whose outfit, might I add, rocked).
Death Note (manga) | Decent |
Death Note started out pretty good; I raced through the first 70-something chapters. However, near the midpoint it just got really boring and confusing, and the quality of the writing steadily declined. The art and character designs were neat to look at, and the premise was quite unique, but ultimately it wasn't all that great.
Funbari no Uta (manga) | Decent |
This title refers to two things; the short stories placed at the end of volumes of the Shaman King manga (like, from vol. 5 on - wait, let me check....Yeah, vol. 5) and the single chapter supposedly meant to be a wrap-up chapter for the entire series. The short stories are awesome. Each one is a three-page chunk of what's usually Yoh/Anna fluff (my favorite!), or occasionally the continuing adventures of "Kokkuri Angel Tamao"; either way, the result is sweet and often deserves at least a chuckle. The summary chapter, however....not so great. Its most obvious flaw is the fact that IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE, although maybe I'll be able to make a little more sense of it once I finish the actual Shaman King manga. Hana is really freaking cute, though.
Wolf's Rain (manga) | Not really good |
I've never seen Wolf's Rain, although apparently the manga is a short spinoff kind of thing that has nothing to do with the anime. Anyway, I didn't particularly care for it; it was too short and seemed to have no point. |
