Hiromu Arakawa's vision of a world of magical "alchemy" and its backdrop of an alternate Industrial Revolution-era Europe makes for an amazing epic about the lengths at which one goes to achieve their goals and the echos of terrible tragedy and peoples' struggle to overcome it. Very well detailed characters, impressive blend of drama and action. My only issue is that it seems to rely on a lot of sensationalism at times, which distracts from the themes. It tries to punctuate itself too often, making it seem like the story merely exists to get to those points at times. Still, probably the best manga of its type, if it has a type.
