One Piece's Jolly Roger Spotted in Protests in United States, Madagascar
posted on by Ken Iikura-Gross

One Piece's Jolly Roger has flown over protests in East African country Madagascar since at least the beginning of the month. According to NBC News, young Madagascar residents have protested the national government over “inequality, corruption and widespread political impunity.” President Andry Rajoelina was overthrown after an impeachment with military backing last Tuesday. CNN reported that Rajoelina himself came to power in 2009 after a youth-led movement backed by the Madagascar military.
One Piece's Jolly Roger appeared in protests across Indonesia at least as early as August. The protests came from frustrations with numerous controversial policy changes since Prabowo Subianto began his term as president. The most recent change that sparked the protests was a revision to Indonesia's National Armed Forces Act.
The flag then flew during protests in Nepal, the Philippines, and France in September. The protests against corruption in the Nepalese government led to Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli's resignation on September 9. Anti-corruption protests in the Philippines brought out the One Piece symbol, while protesters in France against President Emmanuel Macron and the governement's planned spending cuts also used the flags.
