Depth of Field

This technique comes from cinema, where objects on one plane are in focus while objects on another place are out of focus and blurred. Oftentimes, the focus is changed from one plane to another for dramatic effect. In traditional cel animation, this was simply achieved by placing the cels at differents heights on the filming table and changing the focus of the camera. But with digital animation, the same process is simulated with special algorithms.
